THE EFFECTIVITY OF PMTCT IN THE PRISON

A.     BACKGROUND

Basically, PMTCT program is not only applied in the society, but also in the prison/detention center (RUTAN) of Makassar. Even though it seems difficult because of the regulation, but it must be done to reduce the born baby from a HIV-infected pregnant mother. At least, every 3-4 months in RUTAN of Makassar, we will find one infected pregnant mother case.

B.      PROCESS

The procedures of PMTCT treatment are:

1.        Giving information related to HIV/AIDS and the importance of VCT;

2.         Listing the pregnant mother in the women block and report to the clinical doctor in RUTAN of Makassar;

3.        Suggesting them to do VCT;

4.        Supporting HIV/AIDS-infected pregnant mother;

5.        Giving prophylaxis before the birth of the baby cooperate with Wahidin Hospital;

6.        Child-birth process in Wahidin Hospital;

7.        Controlling in giving prophylaxis to the mother and her baby.

C.      RESULT

During becoming the staff of Metamorfosa Makasssar, I’ve finished assistance for two HIV-AIDS infected pregnant mothers and still accompany two pregnant mothers in the RUTAN of Makassar.

D. CONCLUSION

Realizing the importance of the prevalence of HIV infection, PMTCT program will be very important to be done, included in the prison because the HIV-infected pregnant mothers cases also can appear in the prison and need assistances and more effective treatment.
